New Class added
New Class Offering!
This new class is designed for parents of neurodiverse kids. I’d like to create community together, through movement and the shared knowing that we are all in some way going through similar things. About five years ago, I was majorly struggling with my son’s challenges. No one around me seemed to understand what I was going through. No one could relate. Everyone around us just wanted my kid to conform; conform to some imaginary, unrealistic set of rules. Rules that were unfair, not inclusive, and unfounded. My kid’s therapist help me help my kid.
To help myself, I wrote a book. I wrote a book about troublemakers and superpowers. Well, first I had the idea, then I wrote a pitch, then a proposal, then a contract (yay), then a draft, then a full manuscript with 30 stories about 1,500 words each, then those same stories cut down to 700-800 words each, then I had to cut one story out, and now we are finally prepping it to be released to the world! This process from idea to actual book you can hold in your hands took years. It started when my kid was in 3rd grade, now he’s in 8th, and people won’t be able to hold it in their hands till he’s a freshman! I have never had my own ADHD tested this extremely in my 40+ years on this planet.
The process was daunting and excruciating. It was beautiful and inspiring. I’ve run marathons before, even a 50k, and every time I worked on this book it was like running a marathon. My brain has gone through the anguish and glory of like 100+ marathons! Ha! But most of all, it was as if I connected with each person I wrote about in a way that made me feel like I could do anything I needed to do for my kids. And they both are going to be OK. I say both kids because my youngest was diagnosed with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and a generalized anxiety disorder during this process. The stories in this book gave me the strength to understand and advocate for both of my kids. Also, these stories helped me understand my own anxiety & ADHD which led me to seek out a therapist for myself.
This wellness class I’m starting is what I wish I had when I was going through the hardest times. I guess I didn’t really need or want to vent to people, I just needed to be around people that got it. People that weren’t judging me or my kid. I needed people to just be ok with the ways I advocated for my kid even if it was so different than what they were used to.
This class is for you to have “you time” with the knowledge that you’re surrounded by a supportive community. I will guide our group in warm-ups, exercise, stretching, and meditation. My hope is that you will feel supported and invigorated after each class, so you can be there for your kid(s) and family. Please reach out if you are interested.
